What Happens After a Chargeback? A Complete Timeline
A step-by-step breakdown of what happens to your money, your account, and your options when a fan files a chargeback on OnlyFans.

You check your balance and something is off. A payment you already counted is gone, or sitting in a "pending dispute" state you did not ask for. No email warning. No chance to respond first. That is what a chargeback looks like from the creator's side: a deduction that arrives before an explanation.
This post walks through exactly what happens after a fan files a chargeback on OnlyFans, step by step, and what your options actually are at each stage.
What a chargeback is (and why it differs from a refund)
A refund is initiated through OnlyFans. You or the platform issues it, and in theory there is a process. A chargeback skips all of that. The subscriber goes directly to their bank or card issuer and disputes the transaction. The bank contacts the payment processor, the money is reversed, and OnlyFans deducts the amount from your earnings before you hear a word about it.
That distinction matters because it determines what leverage you have, which is very little by the time you find out.
The complete chargeback timeline
Days 0 to 7: The dispute is filed
The subscriber contacts their bank or card issuer claiming the charge was unauthorized, that the content was not delivered, or simply that they do not recognize the transaction. Under US federal law (the Fair Credit Billing Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1666), cardholders have the right to dispute charges. Under Visa and Mastercard network rules, they typically have up to 120 days from the transaction date to file.
The bank reviews the claim and, if it finds enough reason to proceed, initiates a chargeback through the card network.
Days 1 to 14: OnlyFans is notified and acts
Once the card network initiates the chargeback, OnlyFans receives notice from its payment processor. At this point the platform freezes or reverses the disputed amount from your creator balance. This happens before any investigation concludes. You lose access to those funds while the dispute is live.
OnlyFans policy is explicit: disputed amounts are removed from creator income.
Act immediately: your response window
This is the most critical part of the timeline. The window to respond varies by card network: Visa disputes in the US and Canada have a 9-day merchant response window as of July 2025; Mastercard allows up to 45 days. Because you will not know which network the fan's card runs on, treat every chargeback as if you have 9 days.
OnlyFans handles the dispute at the payment processor level. You are not in direct contact with the bank. Your practical move is to open a support ticket with OnlyFans immediately and submit everything you have: screenshots of content delivery in DMs, transaction IDs, timestamps, and any subscriber communication confirming receipt. The dispute outcome is ultimately out of your hands, but having a documented record matters.
Days 30 to 120: The bank makes its decision
The issuing bank reviews whatever evidence is available and issues a final ruling. Two outcomes are possible. If the chargeback is overturned, the funds return to your balance. If the chargeback is upheld, the loss is finalized.
Most adult content platform chargebacks are upheld. Banks tend to side with cardholders, and digital content disputes are rarely worth the legal cost of a formal challenge.
After resolution: the content problem
Regardless of how the dispute ends, any content the subscriber downloaded before filing is already gone. The chargeback process has no mechanism to recover it, and the bank ruling does not address it. Even if the dispute goes in your favor, any content they already viewed or downloaded stays with them.
How to build a chargeback defense before it happens
The creators who recover funds most often are the ones who had documentation ready before a dispute was filed, not scrambling for it afterward.
Keep records of the following for every transaction:
- Screenshots of content delivery confirmations in DMs
- Records of any subscriber communication confirming receipt
- Transaction IDs and timestamps from your OnlyFans payout dashboard
- Notes on any subscribers who requested then received custom content
If a chargeback does hit, open a support ticket with OnlyFans immediately and attach all of the above. The window is tight.
How Rulta Mate helps
The best defense against chargebacks is not reacting faster after they happen. It is knowing which fans are likely to file one before you ever interact with them.
Rulta Mate has a shared chargeback database across creators. When a fan files a chargeback against any creator in the network, their username is flagged in the shared database. The next time any creator opens a chat with that fan, an alert shows up right in the conversation with their chargeback history: how many creators they have done it to and the total amount. You can then choose to block them manually or enable automatic blocking so flagged fans cannot interact with your account at all.
It runs in the background. No manual checks required.
Try Rulta Mate free and know exactly who you're dealing with before a chargeback ever hits.
FAQ
Can OnlyFans dispute a chargeback on my behalf?
Not in any meaningful way. The dispute runs between the cardholder's bank and the payment processor. OnlyFans sits in the middle but generally does not fight individual chargebacks on behalf of creators. Submit documentation to their support team so there is a record, but do not count on the platform to contest it for you.
Will I lose my account if I get too many chargebacks?
Repeated chargebacks can put your account standing at risk and affect future payouts. OnlyFans' terms warn that high dispute rates damage account status. The platform also has to stay in good standing with its payment processors, so an unusually high chargeback rate on a creator account draws scrutiny.
Does the fan keep access to my content after filing a chargeback?
Any content they downloaded before filing the dispute is gone. There is no mechanism in the chargeback process to recover it. As for their OnlyFans account, per the platform's own terms, access "may be discontinued or limited" after a dispute, but this is not guaranteed and does not happen automatically.
Can I take legal action against a fan for a fraudulent chargeback?
Filing a chargeback for content you received and watched or downloaded is technically a form of friendly fraud, but pursuing individual legal action is rarely practical. The disputed amounts are usually small, cross-jurisdictional enforcement is inconsistent, and proving intent is difficult.
